2012 comes to an end with the third instalment of Love to Dine Dish of the Month. As always, December was a month of culinary indulgence, with numerous Christmas celebration dinners and – the reason for the recent hiatus in posting on Love to Dine – a Christmas cruise holiday for Mr W and me, with several Spanish ports of call that allowed me to eat lots of delicious tapas.
So, December’s Love to Dine Dish of the Month was a close run thing, but I’ve decided to award it to a fantastic pudding that we tried at Pier 64 in Penarth early in the month: a tarte tatin with crème anglaise.
I love an authentic French tarte tatin, but all too often when you order it in the UK you’re presented with a variation on the theme – ranging from tarte aux pommes (nice, but not what you’ve ordered) to something resembling apple upside down cake. Happily, the Pier 64 version, which was on their Sunday lunch menu when we visited in early December, was the real thing.
Juicy chunks of apple infused with rich, decadent caramel sat atop a crisp pastry base and were complemented perfectly by a creamy vanilla custard served on the side. An extra heavenly touch came from the caramel having a little bit of crunch in a few places on top of the apple.
Pier 64 is one of my favourite places for Sunday lunch, and I’m hoping this delicious dessert will put in an appearance again soon.
Thank you for reading in 2012, and wishing you all the best for a fantastically foodie 2013!
